“Dirty Dance" is a piece inspired by Pippa Bacca's performance piece that took place in 2010. The artist's piece showcases an effort towards bringing justice to the world and spreading a message of peace. Yet, taking her life and work references as an inspiration, The performance piece "Dirty Dance" elaborates a simple journey of a woman carrying a wedding dress - which is a symbol of naiveness and purity- and getting it dirty to convey an understanding of women's experience and self-determination. As the journey continues and the wedding dress becomes dirtier, it displays the idea that women shape their own experiences and choose to get dirty through hardships they face in their environment. The concept of the dress being dirtied and altered by the woman's own choice as she wears it and moves through various spaces is an ultimate reflection of how women choose their experience through their words, arts, bodies, and recognitions. Utilizing a wedding dress symbolizing a clean slate and innocence, I showcased a woman who is influential by participating in a journey, which is a form of reaction towards inequity faced by every woman during their own journey. As the dress gets dirtier, the audience can tell that through a constant movement and juxtaposition between the stillness of the body showcasing altering emotions; it displays that even through the battles that come from being a woman, they choose to take them and get dirty by their own choice. The song playing throughout the piece, Clair De Lune composed by Claude Debussy, compliments the overall idea of a cinematic and beautiful journey of a woman who keeps smiling through every challenge they face and moving on. Women themselves shape their own experiences in their journey to reflect their capability. Thus, the locality of the piece, showing a simple journey of a woman who seeks to stay positive through hardships, compliments the overall idea of self-determination and independence of a self-sufficient woman.
